Hip dysplasia: What you need to know

Hip dysplasia is a fear for every German Shepherd Dog owner.

What do you need to know?

In dogs, hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic (polygenic) trait that is affected by environmental factors.

Studies have shown there is a genetic factor to HD (hip dysplasia), but it is suprisingly low - 15-40%

Other factors include:

  • Environment

  • Body Weight

  • Nutrition
